Stone Gully is a 180-acre restoration farm in Eastern Kentucky. When we acquired this land, it had suffered extensive damage: the mountaintop had been strip-mined for coal, the woods had been logged, the land had been overhunted, and the lower fields had been saturated with chemicals from tobacco farming, rendering them barren.
Through careful management of our flock of sheep and strategic summer mowing, the farm is gradually healing from its long history of abuse. At Stone Gully, we believe that farming should be a collaboration with nature. This philosophy guides everything we do.
We use sheep to help restore the coal-mined areas, carefully grazing them to rebuild grasses and improve the soil. Our livestock guardian dogs protect the sheep without harming wild predators, allowing coyotes to roam freely outside the sheep's territory. Most of our land is maintained as wildlife habitat and butterfly fields, reflecting my lifelong love for butterflies.
Stone Gully's Appalachian handcrafted goods are inspired by the natural beauty around us. They are crafted from sustainable materials and designed to reduce waste, embodying the harmony between our farm and the environment.
